This buck has been completely nocturnal, at least in front on my cameras. I haven't been out much to get a glimpse of him in person yet but he showed his face last week right during the middle of the day. He sure is a goofy looking thing, I cant decide if he is old or just unique, I scored him close to a 150" with that dagger at about 5-6 inches. This is one of my favorite spots for motion cameras, eventually almost every buck on the property comes for a visit to scent check and grab a bite to eat. It is like a super scrape and bait pile that last for about 3 months. The only buck that didnt visit it was "The King" from last year, he seemed smart enough to stay away.

Big Brow Tine

The Brow Tine buck has finally run out of good luck and hiding skills as the Ultimate Muzzleloader has taken down another giant. It was really my first season that I have solely hunted a single buck on our property. I had my sights set on this deer and I wasn't going to shoot something else until this buck was down.

There were several close calls and through the month of October he was spotted multiple times during hunting hours. Several hunters had bow in hand but he just wouldn't cooperate and managed to slip away. On November 19 I managed to rush a 90 yard freehand shot from a tree stand at him that turned out to be a clean miss, lessen learned, use a rest.

On Thanksgiving eve morning I slipped into a pop-up blind I had set out in early October. This was a spot I was saving until later in the season when the deer had been pushed off the food plots during day light hours. When shooting light finally came the woods was very quiet with a faint breeze drifting through the trees. Less than an hour passed when some movement caught my eye about 100 yards out through the trees.

Through the binoculars I instantly realized it was the Brow Tine Buck and quickly grabbed my gun. Before I could even get my scope on the spot he was standing he was gone and it was so thick with trees I couldn't find him back. Suddenly a rack walked into view and I nearly squeezed the trigger when I noticed it was a buck I call Capt. Hook. He walked on and the monster 6 peeked out from behind a tree and slowly walked into my shooting lane. Now he is facing me wand walking straight towards me at an angle. With him at about 80 yards and a clear shot I decided to take it and not risk losing him in the trees again.

When the smoke cleared he was laying on the ground with what appeared to be a little life in him. I reloaded and started walking towards him to put the finishing round in him when he quickly jumped to his feet and started staggering off through the brush. I ran to a tree to use as a rest and waited for a semi-clear shot. I forced a tight shot between a couple trees and he took a couple big leaps through the creek and into some thick brush on the other side. I ran up to another blown down tree and used it for a solid rest to put in the final shot which finally put him down for good. Needless to say he was a tough guy that refused to go down, the first shot was found to clip the top of the vitals and exited in front of the hind leg.

The downside of being a great photog is you are always behind the camera. Thanks to Eric we have these great shots.

The evening after I missed him he showed up on camera. Unfortunately I didn't check this camera until Thanksgiving weekend when he was already at the taxidermist.

I had a good encounter last week in the stand, it was a typical evening hunt that quickly turned into make or break decision. Who would think at 25 yards you would need to use binocs to check out a buck like this. Check out the video to see what happens when this buck presents an opportunity for a shot.

Another good morning in the blind doing some doe patrol. Took down two more doe after missing an opportunity a little earlier in the morning. These two were tough shots through some thick cover but the old muzzleloader performed just as expected.

Eric and I doing a little doe shooting one night a week or so ago. It sure makes it a lot easier having someone there to run the camera instead of trying to do it yourself. I shot the first one and there was one that didnt run to far off and we got her too.

Nancy shot this 7 point last week, the night before he was chasing some does around and I got some good video of him. I will try to get it up this week.

Aaron leech shot this 9 point on a neighboring property. This buck spent a considerable amount of time on our property given all of the motion camera pictures we got of him. PS. Don't leave your buck laying around where people regularly pick them up for the meat or you might be left missing something.

This opening week of firearm season has produced some good results for the hunt club. We have two very nice deer on the ground with a lot of good hunting time left and big bucks running around. Check back soon for some additonal video and motion pictures of these guys.

Monday morning, our opening morning, Mitch caught this 9 point chasing some does through the brush in front of him and was able to make a nice shot with his muzzleloader. Mitch saw him fall within eyesite of his blind.

On Wednesday night Brian was just getting comfortable in his blind when this giant walked out onto the field. Brian wanted to make sure this was the buck he was looking for so he glassed him for a few minutes before attempting the shot. The story of this buck starts last year when it was passed up a couple of times as he had some great potential and probably would have been a 110"-120" buck. Well this year he put on some incredible mass, a couple stickers and a I dont care attitude. He has been spotted roaming the property and probably on motion cameras 20-30 times over the past couple months. Well 4 oclock yesterdy was his final mistake and Brian made the shot count with his muzzleloader. Even with little sign of blood from a high shoulder hit they were able to track him a short distance into the woods. Great job Brian, we are all really impressed with your field skills you have been working on the past couple years.

This is last year in September just coming out of velvet. You can see the kickers starting to develop on his G2's. Look at the mass he put on in 1 year of growth, this is why we need to let them go so they can grow!

Finally got a doe to cooperate with me and got a good shot on camera. Smoked her at about 20 yards and saw her crash down in the swamp about 75 yards away. Recovery was so much fun and reminded me why I dont shoot doe on the edge of the swamp.

Here are several bucks that have been shot in the last couple weeks by family and friends.

Ryan with a big wide 10 point bow kill in Illinois.

Shortly thereafter he was on them back in Michigan and killed this nice heavy 8 point with a 19" spread.

Merle shot this 9 which tipped the scales at 171lbs. 16 inch spread, 30 yard shot, went 80 yards, rough score 139, from a ground blind, 8 ½ inch brow tines, heavy mass. Lots of fun!!!

Had a couple does come in but wasnt able to get a shot off. I waited for about 10 minutes for this one to come out from behind a branch and when she did I was not prepared. Then my sat made a little squeak as I shifted my wieght and she was gone. Who ever said videotaping by yourself was so easy?

First Buck for Zach - First Buck of the Season

Here is a picture of Zach with his 1st buck ever. He shot it on Saturday night. It was a 15 yard shot and it ran about 100 yards and stopped just before the swamp. Great shot!! An hour and a half earlier he shot a doe from the same stand (10 yard shot) that went about 100 yards and died in an open field. Not bad for an 11 year old. Great buck Zack.

There has also been some good progress on the doe management program during the first couple weeks of bow season. Some of the young hunters have been very successful learning to take game with their bow and arrows.

Last year I took Jeff Elenbaas out doe hunting and had a good time in the blind with him and his brother Ryan. Last year Jeff fell from his treestand and injured his back and is now in a wheelchair but still loves to get out in the woods as much as possible.

It is getting closer everyday and will be here soon. Hopefully everyone is starting to shoot their bows as the early doe season is less than a month away. This weekend sure felt like it was October already and got me thinking it is time. I was doing a little work for our annual meeting and thought I would share a few numbers.

We started seriously managing the property and keeping records in 1999, so this year will be our 10 year anniversary of full out Quality Deer Management. I can say we have come a long way in that time, from the quality of our bucks and deer to the quality and condition of our land. We have done some amazing things like Native Grass Plantings, Irrigation, and Timber Harvests that have greatly improved the natural value of the land. To date we have shot 99 BUCKS and 399 DOES off the property, I call that an achievement that will be hard to beat in West Michigan.

This is Grandpa DeWitt's buck that he shot at Allen Creek this past fall. They did not find it when he shot it but all of them thought it was a good shot and would find it in the spring. Well they did find a little while ago. I belive it measured in the 150's.

Zman was at it again last night, this time in a different stand behind the house. Nice big doe who came in and presented a 12 yard shot and then ran about 100 yards and piled up right on the two-track that leads to the river. His brothers, who love to help track, could easily follow the blood trail in the snow. As of today, Zach has shot more deer than his Dad and Grandpa this year! From Steve DW.

Trifecta! - Big Buck Down

Keith finally got a shot at the Wide 9 on Tuesday night. This buck has been eluding us all season long. We have pictures from this September until this past Saturday and he finally made the mistake of coming out onto the food plot on Tuesday night. Rough scored as a 150' buck which is near the top of the biggest to come off the property yet. This completes the Trifecta of all 3 of us shooting bucks in one year. Jason shot this buck on the 2nd night of the season in Iowa. Came out onto the food plot a little after 4 oclock and I watched him for a while as there were other deer coming out. Another buck starting chasing does off the field so I took the shot. Dropped him with a high lung shot on the edge of the bean field. 10 point, 20.5 wide, nice and heavy all the way out, gross scored 166.

Eric managed to find another big buck on opening day, this time on the Iowa gun season opener. 22" wide, 12" G2's rough scored about 165. Shot at about 175 yards out of one of our new coops.

Congrats to Mike on his first hills buck. Mike took this nice seven point on Saturday night. The buck weighed 162 #'s dressed and had a 17" outside spread. At sixty yards it was a good lung shot and the buck fell 10 yards behind his blind.

Congrats to Alex VanderKolk. He was able to take this nice 7 point for his first buck on Tuesday night the 25th on the corn field under the powerlines. The shot was right in the vitals and despite several attempts to get up the buck dropped right in the field. He weighed 142 #'s and had an outside spread of 16 inches.

Michigan native Dave Brower works for the state's Department of Natural Resources, but he's not a scientist. He's a volunteer with a passion for banding ducks, which he learned from a friend who worked with the DNR. For more than 15 years, Brower has devoted his time and resources to maintaining his 190 duck boxes, determined to band as many hens as possible.

They maintain probably 25 boxes throughout our river bottom every year and have had tremendous success. They have had ducks coming back to the same boxes for over 3 years in a row, flying down to the southern states in the fall and returning in the spring.

Grandpa D has been braggin to me all fall about this 8 point he has seen at Reed City and how he was going to shoot it. Well he shot it on opening night, it was about a 60 yard shot and the buck went about 30 yards. A very nice 8 pt with a 16” outside spread. Not bad for an 89 year old!!

I owe Dan for this one, He called and said he saw a good buck chasing a doe in the swamp and saw it go towards the east and said I should head that way to cut it off. Didn't see the buck Dan saw but this one came from the south. I was standing behind a tree and the deer came within 6 feet until he saw me peek my head around the tree. He took off and at about 50 yds stopped and looked back and that was it. 8 point 19" wide.

Saturday morning was a nice cool morning for hunting, light breeze and slightly overcast. I took a while for some does to come within range but once they did I let an arrow fly. Both were about 12 yard shots standing in the same spot.

#4 has pushed me past the 3 I shot with my bow last year, my record is still 3 in one hunt which I am trying to beat.

A look at browse from my tree stand. The doe by the cherry tree growth is #4. With the lack of acorns this year it is putting some additional stress on our regeneration growth from logging.

Check this out, I have a couple of coyote pictures on this field this year and now this. I didn't even notice the deer laying dead in the field half eaten until I looked at the pictures and thought she couldnt have made it far.

BBD - Big Brow Tine Buck

I Shot this 8 point last night at 7:00 aprox. 28 yard shot with my Bow. This is the 3rd time I have seen this buck this year. Cool thing is Dad saw him at 50 yards (fortunately upwind) walking towards my stand at 6:40. I watched him in the field for 10 minutes and then he started making his way towards me. I stopped him with a little grunt and pulled the trigger. Hit him good but turned out to be a little quartering towards me. I had to watch him bedded down 50 yards away from me looking injured but perfectly alive, he got up right before complete darkness and walked 20 yards and laid back down now looking really weak. We came back 1.5 hours later and he was getting stiff already so he died shortly after I left. Turns out I just nicked the heart, hit a small piece of a lung and the bottom of the liver. Stats are 18” wide, 6” & 7.25” brow tines and 9” & 8” G2’s, rough gross score of 130”. Live wight was 235 Lbs. dressed out at 195 Lbs. Forgot to say this is my 2nd buck with my bow, it been a long time waiting.

BDD - Big Does Down

Whacked a couple does this weekend, Eric shot one on Friday night and I shot one on Saturday morning. I figured I should get it out of the way and make sure everything was working good. It was a low 20 yard shot and I saw her fall over after a 30 yard run.

Also saw some smaller bucks that weren't quite big enough to shoot on our program. They presented some nice shots but I will have to keep waiting.

This is what happens when people try to poach on our property and we catch them. Alex and a friend were duck hunting in the rainy weather when they noticed a couple of people walking out into the woods, after a few quick calls it was confirmed that it was not anyone that should be in our woods. They tracked them down and found one of the them sitting in Mitch's treestand, the other person took off running and was picked up on Tyler St. They had parked by a neighboring business where a bloody arrow was found in the back of their truck. With a little convincing from Alex and Brian they confessed to shooting a 8 point buck on Monday or Tuesday. Ivan Perez was called and they had their gear confiscated, licenses taken away, buck horns and meat will be confiscated and both will face some pretty serious fines and probably lose their hunting rights for some time. Here is their picture, one of them is from Zeeland he graduated a year before I did. The other guy is from Hudsonville, I did not get his name, he is the one that shot the buck and was sitting in the treestand. These guys are either really brave, really stupid or both, they had to cross a brand new fence that was finished in the last couple of weeks to get into the property.

Gary shot a nice turkey on Monday morning, about a 8" beard. I heard it was Gary's first "wild" turkey that he has ever killed. Nice job Gary.

BBD on Opening Day!

Eric and I decided to try and cover some area on the big field and see if we could get lucky and catch a buck sneeking onto the field before they get pressured. This one came out early but we were winded by some does in the center of the field and they all ran back into the swamp. 45 minutes later he came out again and Eric made a good 30 yard shot as he was sneaking through the grass. We tracked him for quite a ways into the swamp and ended up finding him floating in the creek. Heavy 8 point, 19 1/4" wide, 10" G2's and 8" G3's. Gross score is 146.5 inches.

The Licking Branch

While it is a couple weeks early to start scraping activity with the big boys, the young bucks are trying to get a head start on some early does. I have seen several scrapes starting to get active in the last week or two. Here a young buck is working the branches above the scrape leaving his scent and checking who else has been there. I haven't done a lot of video with the motion cameras but I think it is pretty cool to see them like this.

Looks like this one is still in velvet. Maybe he is a late bloomer or it is possible that some bucks never lose their velvet.

This looks like a really young buck but he is showing some great potential, he is starting to develop some really interesting character in his head gear.

September Rain

How many deer are too many deer? These are a couple different pictures of the browsing pressure that our property is under during the summer months when there is the most amount of forage available for consumption. The recent rain has sure helped everything green up and germinate.

Need a lawnmower, this is off the "Big Field" where we have about 25 acres of food planted, there was probably about 6 inhes of growth inside the fence. We have about 4 acres of clover, 5 acres of clover/chicory mix, 5 acres of sorghum, 5 acres of beans/turnips and 5 acres of turnips. we tryed planting some corn as a screen around the edges of the field and a strip down the middle but it obviously didnt work out. You can see what is left of the few protected stalks that the deer haven't devoured. On another note the turnips are coming up really well, even in the area we planted in the beans because they were getting eaten down so hard.

It isnt always the obvious that gets noticed, looking at these young maple trees you would think they were intended to grow without leaves near the ground. But that is not the case, that is a typical browse line in an over populated forest that can not support that number of current wildlife calling it home. This winter we will need to go through and hinge cut these trees to get the forage near the ground.

I havent had cameras out this early in September before, it sure is fun getting pictures of these bucks coming out of velvet. Supposedly they eat the stuff and it is thought to be high in nutrients.

This buck looks decent with good brow tines but his G2 & 3's are a little lacking. His body is starting to fill out and look muscular which is a good sign. Hopefully we will get another angle of him to see how wide he is.

This buck is also decent but could use another year or two of growing to reach maturity.

Warm Season Success - We Love Grass

These are pictures of some of the better areas of WSNG that came in. This is a 2 year old planting just to the south of the Grainery. The grass averages about head height to a foot or two over my head. That equates to about 6-8 feet of new cover in less than 2 years time with 2 summers of minimal rainfall and extremely sandy soils where most other plants would struggle to survive.

What we had before was your typical pasture/brome grass that would be about 2 feet high. This type of grass is not a tough grass and gets easily flattend by the first early snowfall. Our new grass should hold up well to snow and provide tremendous cover for deer, turkeys and all other types of wildlife.

It is hard to show height and thickness of the grass, I strongly recommend taking a walk through it sometime and experience it four yourself. There are a good number of wildflowers coming up and 4 types of grasses that we planted.

This is a picture of a 4-wheeler from about 20 yds. away when i am slightly crouched down. You can easily see how something can hide in this grass and let a predator pass within yards without being seen.

Looks like the summer groups will be breaking up pretty soon, the velvet is off this buck already. That means October is not far away and the testosterone is going to start building.

Looks like a decent 7 point, once the velvet comes off he will probably be pretty thin, another year will look good on him.

We finally have some beans in Iowa that are turning out good. While some of the new food plots will need some more work I think this is going to provide some excellent late season food once all of the crops come down around our farm.

Wierd Beard

Alex and friend shot this turkey on the last day of the spring season this year. The beard discoloration is supposedly caused by a malnutrition or high stress period of time. Possibly from this winter when we had bad weather and a lot of ice on the ground.

These are some pictures of sheds we found in Iowa a couple of weekends ago. The first one measured about a mid 150's class buck, hopefully he will put on 20 more inches this year. This is getting me to think about hunting season which is only 6 months away.

One of our friends down there also found some nice sheds and shot a good buck with his bow.

A farm down the road had a good year as well taking this nice buck. They also found the sheds off the 12 point in the motion picture.

BBD Southern Style!

The gun opener in Iowa was a cold and wet one with temps in the high 20's, strong winds, and lots of freezing rain. There is a lot of clay on the property and they didn't know if they were going to be able to get out.

It must have been tough hunting in the rain and sleet, same weather we have had here only a day earlier in Iowa.

Things warmed up in a big way for one lucky hunter on the afternoon of the second day of the season. The new Ultimate Muzzleloader served its purpose making an extremely long shot (we'll confirm the range tomorrow, but its safe to say it was over 200 yds.) on a great buck.

Unbelievable we have trail camera pictures of almost every buck we have shot off out properties. These were taken in early November when Eric was bow hunting. When you get pictures like these it makes it easier to sit on the stand a little longer.

Thanksgiving Feast

Merle shot this awesome 12 point Friday morning after passing up many young bucks throughout bow season and early gun. This one has double brow times and double G2's & G3's on the left. Truly the type of bucks we are looking to harvest off the property.

Brian shot this 8 point Friday morning as well. It had an injured rear leg from something, possible hit by a car as there was some bruising under the skin.

Dale finally got a chance at this big 10 that we have several pictures of. About 20" wide with nice long tines, and almost perfectly symmetrical. Not quite as massive as Merle's or Nancy's so it will be interesting to see how old he is from the tooth analysis.

Chris and his boys had a good night in the blind when they shot this 9 point Saturday night.

Nancy started the opening morning off shooting this nice 10 point ending a seven year drought of no bucks.

Buck Down

Shot this 8 pt. on the morning of November 9 at about 8:45. It was chasing a doe, could not get the buck to stop until the doe stopped. About a 35 yard shot. I released and the arrow found its mark and I watched him run about 60 yards until he fell. It weighed 145 lbs. dressed and it has a 17.5" outside spread.

Here are a couple of examples I wanted to share to show everyone what we are looking for and trying to grow out in the Hills. This came off of our Iowa property in the last 2 weeks. Look at the body size, thick necks, massive horns and old face.

Compare this body with the ones below and you can see a big difference, this one is smaller and thin, but has great potential.

Size of the neck and big belly, horns are small for the area and would probably be let go.

This guy looks good from this angle. Massive horns that are clearly outside his ears.

Yup. definitely a shooter.

Look how the neck is an extension of his chest, it makes his head look small.

Two pictures of what I am calling the "BBB" buck. He sure looks nice now but would be ever bigger next year if we can all wait. Same buck as the first picture in the post below.

Can easily identify this one from the crab claw on his left hand side. Looks like this is the same buck as the second buck in the post below.

These ar all nice yound bucks that need a couple more years to grow.

Setting the Standards

I think if we all share our pictures of the bucks we are seeing we will have an easier time identifying the bucks that we should be shooting and the ones that we should be passing up. I am starting by posting the first good pictures I have got this year and writing my thoughts below each buck.

Appears to be developing good mass and length, should be left to grow another year for those that have shot several bucks already. Nickname "Tiple B or BBB" as in Big Browtine Buck.

Clearly great potential here, nice width and form, but a very young buck that should be passed.

Nice average buck that we typically all pass up.

Hard to tell from the picture but there appears to be some pretty heavy mass and good beam length. A possible shooter, hopefully will get a clearer look soon.

These two appear to be the same, young buck that hopefully stays on the property.
